Waterford boxer Kelyn Cassidy could be forgiven for feeling fate is conspiring against him. Twice in the last 11 months he has been within touching distance of securing a slot at the Paris Olympics only to come up agonisingly short.

At the European Games in Krakow last June, Cassidy was two points clear on three of the five judges’ scorecards after two rounds of the 80kg quarter-final against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak, an Olympic silver medallist, world champion and multiple European champion.
