Shamrock Rovers striker Aaron Greene has been named SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month for April.

The 34-year-old hit five goals across last month, as well as an assist, as the champions won four of their seven April games.

Having found the net against Dundalk and Bohemians earlier this year, the Dubliner hit a brace in their 3-0 win against Sligo Rovers, before following that up with two more goals in the Hoops’ huge 3-1 win away to Derry City the week after.

Stephen Bradley’s men played out back-to-back draws against leaders Shelbourne and Galway United but returned to winning ways against Drogheda as Greene closed out the month with his fifth goal in the emphatic 4-0 win. He is his side’s leading goal-scorer at the moment and sits second in the league charts, two behind Derry’s Patrick Hoban.

Greene has already bagged more goals than he did in 2023 as the halfway point of the campaign approaches, with the champions sitting joint-second in the table, three points behind Shels ahead of tomorrow’s Tallaght Stadium clash with managerless St Patrick’s Athletic.

Galway United goalkeeper Brendan Clarke finished second in the voting while Bohs forward James Akintunde was third respectively.

“We had a good month but I'd rather be top of the table than taking this award,” said Greene, with the Hoops looking to bounce back tomorrow after suffering a home defeat to Waterford last Monday.

“We still have a bit of work to do. Personally I don't really reflect. I look at the next game and my full focus will be on Friday. I have seven (goals), if I'm reflecting on my personal performance I think I should have a lot more. But I'm just fully focused on St Pat's on Friday because we let ourselves down big time on Monday."
