Miriam O’Callaghan has shared her excitement ahead of her big reunion with her son, who flew home from Australia this week.

The RTÉ presenter is mum to eight children — four daughters with her first husband, and four boys with Steve Carson, who she’s been married to for almost 25 years.

Taking to social media on Tuesday, Miriam revealed that her son Daniel was on his way home from Australia after almost 18 months.

She shared a video from Dublin Airport and gushed that she was “very excited” to see him and joked that she was going to lock him in his bedroom.

“One of my children, one of my sons has been Down Under for almost a year and a half and he’s coming home and I’m getting him now,” she told her followers.

Captioning another post, she said: “Very excited! Collecting one of my sons from Dublin Airport - he’s been in Australia and New Zealand for almost a year and a half.

“It’s the longest I’ve ever been apart from one of my children. When I get him home, I am locking him in his bedroom and throwing the key away.”

Friends and followers flocked to the comments section to share their excitement about the big reunion, including Newstalk host Ciara Kelly, who said: “I know this feeling it’s incredible.”

One person wrote: “Ah that’s so exciting and you’ll be hugging him all day, enjoy him”.

Another added: “How fabulous – you must be wishing away the minutes until that first hug”.

And someone else chimed in: “Sooooo wonderful Miriam. A wonderful moment.”

The 64-year-old previously revealed that she thought Australia was too far away for her.

She told VIP Magazine at the time: "My son is off to Australia and I was thinking, 'Will I ever make the effort to go during the year?' And I am thinking 'No!' Why not?

"It is just so far away! I am happy just to go to... Rathmines [laughs]! I am not hugely adventurous, I don't really like going away. Every day for the past two years I try to light a candle in the church on the corner for my kids.

"My dreams for them are that they stay healthy and happy and that they meet nice people because your life partner is the most important decision in your life – if you choose to have one."
