Abigail review: Self-aware vampire tale has a neat twist but ultimately lacks bite

Rising Irish star Alisha Weir and Kathryn Newton in 'Abigail'

Will vampire films ever be scary again? The odds aren’t great, but Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Abigail pushes harder than most of its contemporaries. A great idea helps. What if, asks this playfully choreographed bloodsucker feature, a team of kidnappers, hired to abduct the ballerina daughter of a powerful millionaire, realised all too late that their victim was, in fact, a terrifying monster?

It’s a marvellous concept and, if the folks at Universal had wanted to create a proper conversation starter, they might have hidden Abigail’s true nature from its pre-release marketing campaign.
