Peadar Tóibín this ­weekend insisted that Aontú was not a “catch-all” party, and said it did not aim to appeal to every voter.

The former Sinn Féin TD acknowledged that many of his policies meant some voters would not even consider giving one of his candidates a preference on a ballot paper. But he said he remained convinced that he was more in touch with the electorate than any of the established political parties — be they in government or opposition.
