Meath man (30s) pleads not guilty to €1,500 Westmeath shoplifting spree
A county Meath man has pleaded not guilty to stealing close to €1,500 in alcohol and giftware from various outlets in Westmeath.
Martin Stokes (35) 13 Castlemeadows, Ring Road, Trim, Co Meath appeared at a sitting of Mullingar District Court yesterday (Thursday) to face three separate shoplifting offences.
A bench warrant, the court heard had also been outstanding for Stokes’ arrest after the accused failed to show at a sitting of Cavan District Court in March to answer a further, unrelated theft charge from Foys Homevalue and Euronics, Market Street, Cootehill, Co Cavan.
That alleged Stokes stole €2,400 worth of cordless hoovers during an incident from August 2020.
When details surrounding the Westmeath charges were read out before Judge Bernadette Owens, Stokes entered not guilty pleas to all three.
The first of those, on November 11 last year, as outlined by Sgt Orla Keenan, alleged Stokes entered Circle K, N4 Westbound, Mullingar, Westmeath before walking out moments later with €218 worth of alcohol.
Just over a month later, on December 12, Stokes was arrested and later charged in connection to the theft of eight gift sets, totalling €782 from Boots, Harbour Place Shopping Centre.
The final charge stemmed from an incident at Aldi, Athlone Road, Kinnegad, Westmeath where Stokes is alleged to have stolen 20 bottles of whiskey, valued at almost €470.
Upon opting for the case to be heard in the District Court and tendering not guilty pleas, Stokes was remanded on continuing bail to a sitting of Mullingar District Court on July 12 for hearing.
