Macroom councillor Ted Lucey has asked if it would be possible to have more council staff working on Bank Holiday weekends to clean up “the amount of rubbish” that ends up around the town after night-time festivities.

“The last long weekend the amount of rubbish that was in town on the Monday morning, it was everywhere. The Sunday night seemed to be the busiest night on the Bank Holiday weekend,” Cllr Lucey said at the latest Macroom Municipal District meeting on Thursday.

“It’s maybe too late this weekend but is there any hope of getting people in Sunday and Monday mornings of Bank Holiday weekends to [empty] bins, do something with those plastic glasses around the square, whatever premises they came out of I don’t know.

“There was an exceptional amount of them around the square on Monday.”

Cllr Lucey, who is chair of Macroom Municipal District, acknowledged that the outdoor staff do a great job of cleaning up the town following long weekends, but asked if more could be done by having more staff on during the weekend itself.

In response, senior executive engineer, James Dwyer, told Cllr Lucey that the MD does bring staff in on two days over long weekends but acknowledged that they may need to be scheduled to work on the “right days”.

Cllr Lucey said that it was particularly important to have outdoor staff working on Bank Holiday Mondays to clean up litter produced on Sunday nights, which seem to be the busiest.
