Phase 1 of the long-awaited redevelopment of the former Neo Data site on Bridge Road in Listowel is available for public consultation until June 6.

The proposed works are considered beneficial for users of the North Kerry Greenway and the local Childer’s Park by providing important facilities.

This would see the construction of a trailhead building with lighting, landscaping, information signage, amenity space, public seating, bicycle stands, bike repair station, and a drinking water station.

The project is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) and Kerry County Council.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Jimmy Moloney described the announcement as very important. He said the former Neo Data building was an eyesore for years. The location, which is near the entry to Listowel town, the town park, and greenway, means development is necessary.

“Once the funding became available for what is a prime location, it was important to develop it,” Cllr Moloney said.

“It’s important we get it done. It’s important for the whole town as it will compliment the current amenities we have: the greenway and town park. There is so much going on in this area that it’s vital to improve it,” he said.

Alongside this project, Kerry County Council is currently developing a masterplan for the larger riverside sites including the remainder of the Neo Data site, the Ball Alley, and the town council depot.

This would consist of Phase 2 of the project that proposes enhancing outdoor recreation activities and providing showers and changing facilities along the Blueway and River Feale.

“In the next phase – and we have funding for this – we will incorporate the rest of this site and the whole river bank area. It’s a fabulous place and it’s great to see progress taking place,” Cllr Moloney said.

“I’ve said this in that past that building the greenway on its own is not enough. We also need the ancillary facilities that are safe, clean, and accessible. This is the first step and it’s exciting. There is so much we can do with a site like this,” he said.
