The Office of Public Works has announced that Sceilg Mhichíl will reopen to public visitors this Saturday, May 11, 2024.

The magnificent heritage site is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Republic of Ireland and is a hugely popular tourism attraction in Kerry. It however has strict visitor numbers to protected the magnificent site and it is only accessible by boat and dependent on favourable weather, sea and island conditions.

Visitor numbers are restricted to 180 a day – a limit introduced in 1994 – to protect the island. A management plan for the island which is in place until 2030, aims to ensure "strict control over the means of access and the number of visitors" to maintain the location’s value.

There are only 15 permits to ferry visitors to the island. An e-tender for those permits was to open this year but was deferred and those with existing permits were granted licences for the 2024 subject to the strict operating conditions.

Interest in the island has exploded since the filming of Star Wars on the remote location and it is hoped that this year will be another busy season.

Kieran O’Donnell, T.D Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW said the site one of Ireland’s most iconic sites and he is delighted it is to re-open this weekend. Other years the opening had to be postponed due to weather conditions.

“I am very pleased to announce the reopening to visitors of this unique world heritage site for the summer season. Sceilg Mhichíl is one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks and plays a significant role in the local rural tourism economy. The reopening of this UNESCO World Heritage site to visitors for the summer season takes place this weekend. Soak up the awe inspiring surroundings and have a safe and enjoyable visit”.

“As custodians of this site, the OPW continue to preserve, protect and conserve the island’s heritage and promotes an appreciation of the early monastic site and its breath-taking natural setting for present and future generations to come”.

It is recommended that anyone planning a visit to the Sceilg Rock should view the Skellig Michael Safety Video prior to booking a visit to the island as you will be in a better position to judge your suitability for this type of visit.
