Local Cllr James Byrne welcomed Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers TD to Drogheda recently to discuss the rapid expansion of Drogheda and its transport needs with him, and Senator Erin McGreehan.

During the meeting, the former Mayor requested additional emergency funding be provided to Louth County Council to repair more of the damaged roads as a result of the unprecedented level of rainfall in recent months.

"We've all come across some shocking examples in the area. I was dismayed to hear at our last Council meeting that no money was available to repair the road at Lynch's Cross, which forms part of the Boyne Camino route. I'm hopeful that more money will be allocated for our local roads,” says Cllr Byrne.

"I also raised the need for funding from the Department for a section of phase 2 of the northern cross route adjacent the railway line which won’t be funded by developers and he acknowledged that Council officials had made a submission to the Department on this”.

He said they also discussed the negative impact of tolls on Drogheda and the need to provide better connectivity between both sides of the Boyne.

"I explained to him how it took me 35 minutes to get from side of the town to the other to meet him, which is not sustainable,” he added. “I also raised the issue of no train stop/platform for north Drogheda and requested an extension to the D4 bus route as far as the new roundabout at Ballymakenny to serve the needs of the new communities in the area.

"The bus has to go as far as the roundabout to turn so it's just a matter of adding a couple of bus stops to the route. I will be following up with officials in the NTA to progress this”.
