Local authority bosses in Monaghan have launched an open appeal for hotel and guest house owners to put forward accommodation in a bid to meet the county’s homelessness crisis.

Senior officials have reached out to prospective suitors with a view to adding them to the council’s index of emergency accommodation.

The council said much of that focus is to add to its capacity to house homeless individuals and families in the greater Monaghan and Carrickmacross areas.

“Monaghan County Council is seeking expressions of interest from Proprietors of Guest Accommodation/Hotels who wish to have their facility or rooms therein, included in the Council’s list of retained Emergency Accommodation for homeless families and individuals,” the council said in a statement.

“Family and single rooms may be required to meet emergency accommodation needs as they arise.”

Under the terms of any accord reached with property owners, the council said it will nominate clients as required as well as pay an agreed fee.

In return, proprietors are required to provide catering and laundry facilities.

Any submissions are asked to include the type of accommodation, number of rooms included, availability for check in times, prices per night/week/month, to confirm catering and laundry facilities availability as well as details of compliance with fire and building control regulations.

Expressions of Interest should be submitted to housing@monaghancoco.ie.ie for the attention of the A/Senior Executive.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm, April 12 2024.
