OULART & THE BALLAGH

An invitation to all

Oulart-The Ballagh GAA & Camogie Club are hosting “An evening of Wellness” in Oulart Community Centre on 10th May, beginning at 7.30pm. It is open to everyone over 16 years and should be of particular interest to all who are concerned with the well-being of young people.

The guest speakers are John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy and Portlaoise Prisons and Conor Harris, a recovering drug addict who comes to share his story. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

May Bush & May Altar

Just a reminder that today, Wednesday, is the First of May and what we regard as the first day of Summer.

Traditionally, people decorate the May Bush, (white thorn or sceach) on May Eve or May Day, using painted egg -shells, ribbons and streamers of all kinds. Many people, reared in the Catholic faith, erect a May Altar in their homes to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in the month dedicated to her, while for many years the late Gay Byrne maintained the tradition of playing Fr. Sydney McKeown’s recording of “Queen of the May” on 1st May. Both traditional customs can and should be practised and promoted.

Camogie Quiz

A team from Oulart-The Ballagh, calling themselves “The Rebels” finished joint second in the Wexford Camogie Table Quiz that was held in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, last Saturday evening. Well done to captain Colin and his fellow quizzers, Kevin, Brendan and Breda. Alan Brennan was an excellent quiz-master and well done also to all the other teams from the parish that entered the quiz to support the county Senior and Intermediate camogie teams.

County Minor Hurling

Well done to Wexford Minor hurlers on their fine win over Kilkenny, in Wexford Park, last Saturday. Jack Dunne (captain) at centre- forward and Oisín Moore, wing-back, were very influential. The Wickham brothers, Peter and Rhys and Ben Harpur were introduced and played their part in the victory, while Martin Dempsey was the substitute goalkeeper. Michael Jacob is team manager and Helena Jacob is a coach/selector.

Double Header

Wexford Minor and Senior hurlers and their backroom teams are wished the best of luck in their matches against Galway next Saturday, in Wexford Park. A packed stadium is expected at this feast of hurling and supporters are advised to get in early. See local papers for exact details.

Leinster Final Winners

Congratulations to Caoimhe Moore and her Wexford team-mates on winning the Under 16 Camogie Shield Final, last Saturday. Well done also to Lee Harpur and Oisín Byrne who were part of the Wexford CBS hurling team that won a Leinster final recently.

Model County Draw

The annual Club & County Draw 2024, organised by Wexford GAA, took place last week and the first prize of a car was won in the Marshalstown area. Oulart-The Ballagh’s sole winner was Anne Kirwan who won a voucher valued at €50. Two more draws will take place at the end of May. Best of luck to all who have bought tickets that benefit club and county.

ICA news

The night was a great success with the proceeds divided between Kilmore Quay RNLI and ICA Counselling Services, with each getting €785. Adoration of the Blessed sacrament takes place in Glenbrien church on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.

Car parking in Oylegate Church Grounds – The parking area in the church grounds is primarily for use by those attending church services, visiting the cemetery or Prayer Gardens.

An increasing number of vehicles are now using the area for all day parking. This will limit parking space for funerals. Perhaps, it is time to ask for donations from those who are availing of this facility.

In general, proper regulations need to be put in place for all vehicles using the facility. Many are driving in the grounds at dangerous speeds. Some individuals are discarding litter from their vehicles which is doing nothing to enhance the overall appearance of the area. We should not have to continually clean-up other people’s litter who are availing of the facility for free.
