It was revealed at a recent Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District meeting that a new community space will be launching in Gorey Town at the beginning of May.

Director of Services Liz Hore outlined that the Council had been very aware of the lack of community space in the area for quite a while. Wexford County Council have purchased a building for the Family Resource Centre. This will allow them to focus on their work without having to pay a mortgage.

“The new building is being paid for by what we acquired from the funding for town and village and then the members here prioritised the LPT funding for the Gorey Family Resource Centre. It has been agreed that the building will be made available for groups that want to use it. Hopefully when we get the Market House that will be another base that could be used, the upstairs of it for a multi-purpose use,” said Ms Hore.

Method Consulting, an engineering firm which uses a holistic approach to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, did a feasibility study on Gorey’s needs. It was identified in this study that there are a number of structures around the town that had large halls.

“The need that was identified through the consultation process with the community was for smaller community spaces and meeting spaces hence the investment in the family resource centre as opposed to building our own bespoke community centre so that’s why that decision was made that way,” said District Manager, Philip Knight.
