St Mary’s equestrian team has won the All Ireland Interschools competition.

The team of Martha Power, Ciara Sinnott, Ava Donovan, Katie Costello, Isabel Boland and Molly Hennessy Murphy started the competition in September. Their best three scores were taken every day they competed. Up against over 22 different competing teams from across the Republic of Ireland, the New Ross girls showed their mettle and skill, coming out on top. Every day they managed to finish in a scoring position.

Chef d’Equipe Eamonn Donovan said: “The girls have been jumping in the competition since First Year. Ava and Martha have enjoyed success with Wexford Pony Club as well and have won two All Irelands. On finals day the team were neck in neck with Newbridge, with Kilkenny College just behind them.”

Kilkenny College finished first on the day, with St Mary’s in third, meaning with the highest points accrued, the New Ross team won the competition outright.

The girls were awarded sashes and the Perpetual Cup. They will compete at Balmoral Agricultural Show in Antrim on May 18, with the top five schools equestrian teams from Northern Ireland also in contention for top honours.

“Getting to Balmoral was the goal from the start. The fact we won the competition was the cherry on top.”
