The incoming Heritage officer for Wexford County Council is very important and needs to be fully supported in that role, according to Independent New Ross Municipal election candidate, John Dwyer.

“Our county has such a vast history, from invasion to rebellion, from repression to uprising and from starvation to emigration, a comprehensive approach needs to be adopted, not just to record that vast history but to bring it to our schools and to make it available to the general public," said Mr Dwyer.

“One example of that history is the town council record books of New Ross Town Council. There was talk twelve years ago about digitising those valuable record books but I believe that the county council with the help of the Heritage Council should think big in terms of bringing together our counties oral history, its built heritage and the existing written accounts.”

From seafaring to settlements, from state archives such as the military history archives, our history needs to be told, he said.

"Wexford County Council has a duty and an obligation to lead this project and our children and grandchildren should be able to know and be proud of the treasure trove that is the history of our great country.”
