WEXFORD LADIES

The first inter-club team event of the year was held last weekend, and our Intermediate foursomes overcame Enniscorthy 2.5 to 1.5 in a very close and exciting match.

Well done to our team members Josephine Brennan, Therese Glasheen, Theresa Kehoe, Yvonne MacSweeney, Elaine Mullen, Madge Murphy, Mary Rice and Mary Walsh, and substitutes Elaine Bolger, Martina Gately, Osnat Manning and Mary O’Leary. They will play Courtown on May 18.

Many congratulations also to our Challenge Trophy team of Catherine Berney, Liz Butler, Bernie Duffy, Martina Flynn, Kathleen Murphy and Clodagh Williams who had a superb victory away to Rosslare on Sunday.

Remarkably, with the exception of one seasoned campaigner, Kathleen, it was the first time any of the team represented the club! Well done to all and their team manager, the lady Vice-Captain, Mary Robinson.

We had perfect weather for golf at St. Helen’s Bay over the weekend. We could get used to this!

The fine weather saw a great turn-out from members and guests. The scoring was tight on Saturday, with four players finishing on 19 points.

Friday, May 24 (3-5 p.m.) will be our ‘12 and Dine’ team of four (member plus visitors) event at the Burrow, followed by barbecue at the clubhouse. Get booking!

Saturday morning saw the delayed Captains’ drive-in. Club Captain Conor Coone, lady Captain Deborah Byrne, and Junior Captain Eoghan Moore, all hit cracking drives after first hitting joke golf balls.

The decision had been taken earlier to cancel Saturday play for the three-person Champagne scramble to save the course from heavy traffic. The completion took place on Sunday.

The weather is finally starting to be a little kinder and there is a lot of golf to be played, ladies.

Last week we had our first golfer of the year competition which was sponsored by Pettitt’s SuperValu, Enniscorthy. A total of 63 ladies played.

Our second golfer of the year competition will be held on Tuesday, May 14, and is sponsored by one of our new sponsors, Road Lift Ltd. The format will be stableford and there will be the added bonus of a gross prize and a 36+ handicap prize.

Our next Senior open will be on Thursday, May 16, and this will be sponsored by Coppen’s Pharmacy. On Tuesday, May 21, we have a singles stableford competition, sponsored by our long-time loyal sponsor Kilcannon Garden Centre.

Finally, we will round off the month with our third golfer of the year event, which will be a stroke competition, sponsored by another new sponsor, Barrowside Veterinary Hospital.

We are very lucky to have a roster of very generous sponsors which we really appreciate, and we should continue to reciprocate their support.

In team news, our mixed foursomes are playing New Ross on Saturday, May 11, from 3.40 p.m., and our Minor foursomes play Gowran on Sunday, May 12, from 2.10 p.m. at home and 1.04 p.m. away.
