A regular walker on the quay himself, Wexford Independent Alliance candidate for the upcoming local elections Raymond Shannon is calling for urgent action to improve lighting around pedestrian crossings there.

“I come down to the quay front most evenings throughout the summer and winter for some fresh air and to clear the mind really,” Mr Shannon said. “Once darkness falls, It is almost impossible for cars to see people approaching the pedestrian crossings at night time.”

The election hopeful is now urging Wexford County Council to take action, fearing that it could cause a serious incident if left unaddressed.

“The population of the town continues to grow,” he said. “Our visitor numbers for this year with Fleadh 2024 are expected to break all records. Pedestrian safety along our Quays must be a priority for our local authority.

"I am not an engineer but I imagine the electrical infrastructure etc is already there and to improve the lighting to ensure pedestrian safety is not a major ask nor a major task.”
