Eileen Cowman RIP

The Funeral Mass for Eileen (Eilee) Cowman, Monmore, Crossabeg, took place in Crossabeg church on Sunday last. A church very familiar to her, where she made her First Communion, Confirmation and attended weekly Masses.

Her religion was very important to her and an integral part of her everyday life. She prayed with people and for people. Weekly Prayer meetings were held at the home she shared with her Mother and on any afternoon you could find her taking a short break to say a Rosary. She also fulfilled her ambition to visit Lourdes and together with her Mother, to the surprise of her family, she made one trip with the Ferns Diocesan group on a pilgrimage.

She lived a quiet life, so content and fulfilled with her life style. That lifestyle included helping out on the farm, milking cows, feeding calves, checking on other livestock in the fields, chopping firewood and in between all that, cooking.

As referenced at the Mass, she made the best Pastry and her apple and blackberry tarts were a delight to eat. She felt most fulfilled and easy with the quietness of her life, taking walks and calling in on neighbours for a chat and a cuppa, being taken out for lunch now and then, watching nature programmes, and when in season, out with her bowl picking the blackberries.

Knockeen Nursing Home became her “new” home when her health declined, with the dedicated Staff there caring so well for her, with nothing too much trouble to make her comfortable and being of incredible strength and support to her family in her final weeks.

She passed away in Knockeen on Thursday afternoon with family members by her side and reposed there on Friday afternoon. Her Funeral cortege arrived at Crossabeg church on Saturday evening for reception prayers and her Funeral Mass took place on Sunday morning. Burial took place afterwards in the family plot in the adjoining cemetery.

Daughter of the late Mary-Kate and Michael Cowman, and also pre-deceased by her brother Gerry and sister Marie, she is survived by her brothers Nicky (Crossabeg) and Don (Dublin) sister Elizabeth (Norway) sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy. May she rest easy.

Pastoral Area meeting

The following is a message from Bishop Ger Nash, Frs, John Carroll, James Cullen, Barry Larkin, Denis Lennon, Aodhán Marken, Michael O’Shea & Billy Swan.

‘Dear parishioner. We write to you in the wake of a meeting we priests attended recently - where we took a look at our pastoral area - and our own capacity to serve its needs effectively as priests, into the future. Our pastoral area combines four parishes and is spread across seven churches – Bride Street, Rowe Street, Clonard, Piercestown, Murrintown, Barntown and Glynn.

We are seven priests in the pastoral area – Frs Billy Swan, Michael O’ Shea and James Cullen in Wexford parish, Fr. Barry Larkin and Monsignor Lennon in Clonard parish, Frs. Aodhán Marken and John Carroll in Piercestown/Murrintown and Glynn/Barntown parishes respectively.

‘As a group of priests, we would like to express our gratitude for your support and care of us - and for your understanding of the impacts both - the passing of years, and of our reduction in numbers - are having on our capacity to minister in 2024. Some 20 years ago, we were 14 younger priests across this pastoral area, we are now seven. Current realities require us to engage with you to see what shape we might out on the parishes into the future.

The meeting for Glynn / Barntown takes place on 1st May at 7.30pm. The meeting will also be attended by Bishop Ger and Sean O’Leary, Director of Pastoral Development. You are asked to come along to this meeting and to assist us as we discern with you the future of our area.’
