RIP Sharon

Neighbours and friends of the late Sharon Owen (née Gleave) of Kilmacanogue and formerly of Holywood, Co. Down, were saddened to hear of her passing recently in the care of St Vincent’s Private Hospital. Sharon was surrounded by her loving friends and family as she slipped away peacefully. She was the beloved wife of Tim and cherished mum of Benjamin and will be lovingly remembered by her mother-in-law Felicity, father-in-law John, brothers-in-law Christopher, Edward and Andrew, sister-in-law Irina, niece Sasha and by a wide circle of friends. Sharon was laid to rest after her funeral service in St Patrick’s Church, Powerscourt, followed by burial in the adjoining Churchyard. Your suffering is over now Sharon, you are greatly missed, but may you rest in peace.

May history lecture

The members of our Kilmacanogue History Society are eagerly awaiting the next and last of the season lecture. It will take place on Monday, May 13, in the Kilmacanogue Parish Hall at 8 p.m. and the society are lucky to have Marc McMenamin returning again. Marc, is a teacher of English and History in Stillorgan, a best-selling author and award-winning documentary-maker as brilliant speaker. Those lucky enough to have been present at his previous talks remember being on the edge of their seats listening to his well-illustrated and researched tales of conspiracy and intrigue. This Talk is titled ‘29,000 feet above the sea, George Mallory, Ireland and the 1924 Everest Expedition’. To sum up the content of this lecture, On June 8 in 1924, while scaling Mount Everest, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were spotted from below by Dr Richard Hingston, a medic from Co. Cork, just hours away from potentially conquering the world’s highest peak. His Diary held at Trinity College offers a unique insight into the events of that day. Tragically, their companions lost sight of them in the mist, leaving a void in history that has perplexed adventurers for decades. Did they indeed reach the summit of Everest, nearly three decades before Hillary and Tenzing? Please come along on the 13th and remember.

Contact Andy Bishop or the club’s Facebook page.

GAA games and birthdays

Our two men’s Kilmacanogue GAA senior teams were in action last week with two great wins. The first team beat Kilcoole 1-12 to 0-09 in their Division 1A league clash on Tuesday night in a very impressive display by the lads. Then on Thursday, the second team travelled to Éire Óg where they came away with a brilliant 2-10 to 3-08 victory, well done to all. After the home game on Tuesday evening, the club honoured two fantastic Clubmen, who celebrated milestone birthdays during the week. The club had a special birthday surprise for both Peadar Smyth and Garret Power. Garrett turned 50 years young while Peadar only feels like a 50-year-old also but was actually turning 60. Everyone at Kilmacanogue GAA Club and indeed the community of Kilmacanogue would like to thank these two gentlemen for all they do for our village.
