GAA News

Our Junior D adult footballers played neighbours Annacurra in the league last week and in a close game we came away with a draw. Trailing by a couple of points at halftime we fell further behind after conceding a goal early in the second half, but we battled back strongly to level the game with 10 minutes to go. However, despite being on top at this stage we squandered a number of good scoring opportunities to get a winner. Our annual race night fundraiser takes place on Saturday, May 18, in Paddy’s. Race cards are available from all committee members so please support this event.

Set in a rural pub in Co Leitrim in the 1990s, with four males and one female character, this is one of the most critically acclaimed and popular of modern Irish dramas and has been staged the world over. In the play, three of the local men tell ghostly stories about the locality, while the woman, Valerie, then tells her story about what led her to move from Dublin to Leitrim. The play is a unique portrayal of community life, interpersonal relationships, loneliness, grief and the role of storytelling. Atmospheric, entertaining, dramatic and haunting, The Weir is an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Directed by Ned Dempsey, Coolgreany Drama’s production features Eamonn O’Shiel as Jack, Michael Condren as Brendan, Frank Duffy as Jim, Carl Nuzum as Finbarr and Fiona O’Gorman as Valerie.

KNOCKANANNA

Ballymaghroe Graveyard

Ballymaghroe Graveyard is an important burial ground and monastic site dating back to the eighth century.

Two new information panels have recently been erected in the graveyard. The panels include details of the history of the graveyard, the stonemasons whose work can be seen there and the names of some of those buried in the graveyard as well as some information on the flora and fauna of the area. This quiet and tranquil place is worthy of a visit.
