Mickey Harte’s coach, Gavin Devlin, was spied in Celtic Park last Sunday in a TV gantry on top of the stand watching Donegal as they eventually wore down Tyrone. Fergal McCusker texted me: “A week too late.” Gavin must be the first Ardboe man who doesn’t despise Derry.

Tyrone set up the right way against Donegal. A week did not give them much time, so they mirrored Jim McGuinness’s back-to-the-future blanket defence. They just didn’t have Donegal’s sense of purpose. Put another way, they didn’t have Jimmy McGuinness.
