Tyrone too strong for Monaghan in Ulster MFC

Tyrone 4-13 Monaghan 0-10

Tyrone were 15-point winners over Monaghan in the Ulster MFC.

Tyrone placed themselves right back in contention for an Electric Ireland Ulster MFC semi-final place with a resounding with over previously unbeaten Monaghan at Ardboe.

The result leaves Section A delicately poised going into the final round of games, with Donegal, Monaghan and Tyrone all chasing the one semi-final spot available.

The second and third placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals.

Four Lorcan McMurray points, along with scores from Peter Colton, Liam McGeary and Enda Donaghy, helped the home side build up a five-point lead.

Monaghan responded through place-kickers Cian Rafferty and Killian Kearns, but trailed by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval.

Kearns narrowed the gap to four, but a 33rd-minute goal from Sean Og Teague, who palmed home from Sean Corry’s cross, helped the Red Hand pull away.

Corry added his second point of the afternoon, and their opponents managed just two points from play, through Evan Treanor and Andrew Stewart.

Davin McKeown forced a turnover to send Shea McDermott sprinting through for a second goal eight minutes later, and the Farney lads were unable to turn the game around.

Jamie Concannon landed a couple of long-range points, and clinched victory with a lobbed third goal, exploiting advancing ‘keeper John Flanagan, who lost possession 60 metres out.

And substitute Darren McAnespie completed a comfortable success with a low finish to the net from Corry’s assist in stoppage time.
