Before Saturday’s enthralling encounter at Croke Park, Northampton Saints coach Phil Dowson had warned that his players wouldn’t be playing against ghosts.

He was talking about the historical context and the weight of the occasion, but by the end of the affair it was Leinster who bore a haunted look after avoiding disaster by a whisker.
