The FAI have rejected an appeal by Drogheda United for a red card for defender Jack Keaney in Monday's 4-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers.

United were 3-0 down when Keaney was shown a straight red card by referee Rob Hennessy after a tangle with Hoops forward Johnny Kenny. Replays appeared to show there was no contact between the pair and Drogheda boss Kevin Doherty, ahead of an appeal being submitted, said: "It’s not a foul. It’s awful. We all make mistakes, I make mistakes, players make mistakes, I think that’s a refereeing mistake".

But after an appeal was heard on Tuesday morning, United lost out.

"An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has rejected Drogheda United’s FC’s appeal for wrongful dismissal following Jack Keaney’s red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity in Drogheda United FC’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture versus Shamrock Rovers FC on 29 April 2024.

"In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Jack Keaney will serve a one-match suspension," a statement said.
