Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool should have “considered” a move for Thomas Tuchel before moving for Arne Slot.

The Feyenoord manager is widely expected to be appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at Anfield after agreeing terms over a move.

Slot has publicly stated his desire to move to Liverpool and deals are also thought to have been struck to bring first-team coach Sipke Hulshoff as well as head of performance Ruben Peeters with him.

Klopp has backed the 45-year-old as a “good coach” and a “good guy” and the Dutchman has built a reputation for his free-flowing, high-octane attacking football.

Still, there is little doubt that the Premier League represents a major step up on the Eredivisie.

Erik ten Hag has struggled to build on a promising first year at Manchester United, despite overseeing a successful period at Ajax, while Frank De Boer lasted only four games in charge of Crystal Palace off the back of winning four consecutive league titles with the Amsterdam giants.

That does not necessarily mean Slot will struggle of course but Carragher believes the Reds are taking a risk – particularly with Tuchel available.

“I would have given more thorough consideration to a coach like Thomas Tuchel, who took on and beat Pep Guardiola in the ultimate test - a Champions League final,” Carragher wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

"Tuchel followed Klopp at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund and did well. It has not worked out at Bayern Munich this season, but you only have to look at Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery to recognise how top coaches recover from setbacks."

The German, who has followed Klopp into jobs and both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, will soon be a free agent when he leaves Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
