Rhasidat Adeleke and Sharlene Mawdsley have much in common. Having plied their trade in their teenage years mostly over 200m, both have risen to become world-class seniors at 400m. Both came close, but not close enough, to making the Tokyo Olympics, each of them gutted to be overlooked for selection for the mixed 4x400m relay.

And this weekend, in the Bahamas, both will prove pivotal to Ireland’s chances of having relay teams at Paris Olympics, their blazing one-lap abilities giving their nation a fighting chance of mixing it with the world’s best in the women’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m.
