Triona McCarthy: From Trinny London’s BFF base to P20's new offerings, the SPF products you need to protect your skin from sun damage

Products protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays are vital these days so stay safe this bank holiday weekend

The best SPF’s for this summer!

Triona McCarthy

Can I get a whoop whoop? Can I get a yee-haw? You can tell I love a bank holiday. I hope you’re all having a great time. I’m also hoping as I write this that it’s sunny so let’s talk about sun protection.

Trinny London BFF SPF30 Cream, €48, brownthomas.com

Let’s start with Trinny Woodall’s offering as she was over here recently to launch her Trinny London brand in Brown Thomas and she looked bloody fabulous.

Women love Trinny as she is a powerhouse and so passionate about fashion and beauty. Her Trinny London BFF SPF30 Cream (€48, brownthomas.com) is the perfect base product as it’s a skin perfector that boosts glow and tones down redness, instantly hydrates and wakes up tired-looking skin — and it contains SPF30 to protect skin from everyday exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Sculpted by Aimee’s Sun Mist — SPF 50 Spray, €22, sculptedbyaimee.com

I gave some beauty tips recently at the fabulous Garden Wedding Showcase on the lawns of Farnham Estate Spa & Golf Resort in the company of some amazing women: stylist Mandy Maher, Sara Kennedy of Irish Wedding Blog and jewellery queen Chupi Sweetman. It was very sunny on the day and I wore Sculpted by Aimee’s Sun Mist — SPF 50 Spray (€22, sculptedbyaimee.com) and it kept my skin really protected.

I also love using Garnier BHA + Niacinamide Anti-Blemish Daily UV Fluid (€16.99, boots.ie), which has a very high protection SPF50+ (UVA, UVB and Long UVA) to prevent sun damage. It is great when you have a breakout as it contains BHA (salicylic acid) to visibly reduce blemishes and it has sebum and niacinamide to help soothe and soften the skin.

We all wore Riemann P20 as children in Cork and the brand has really developed in recent years. There are two products available in pharmacies everywhere that have caught my eye: Riemann P20 Urban Shield Face Cream SPF50+ (€30) and Riemann P20 Hyperpigmentation Defence Face Cream SPF50+ (€30). The first one forms an additional barrier against pollution, safeguarding the skin from smog and dust particles while the latter offers protection against sun-induced discolouration and diminishes existing hyperpigmentation on the face and neck. Which is great news for those of us who used baby oil back in the day to get a better tan.

Finally, if you fancy a lighter make-up coverage that also contains SPF, the TanOrganic Daily Defence Tinted Facial SPF50 (€29.99, boots.ie) gives you a dewy finish that enhances make-up or stands alone for an organic glow. It is ethically crafted and is formulated with conscious beauty in mind, according to TanOrganic’s wonderful Noelle O’Connor, the founder of The Kind Brand Company, and gives moisturising, primer and SPF capabilities.

Have a great bank holiday, girls and guys, and remember, as always, to stay super sun safe when gadding about!
