Meath’s long-standing water woes have been given a €40m shot in the arm after Uisce Éireann bosses announced plans to carry out a major upgrade of a 16km stretch of line between Duleek and Navan.

The Royal County’s issues with supply and recurring breakdowns have been a regular bone of contention for households and local businesses in recent months.

Now, it would appear those reservations could be set to ease, specifically in the greater Navan area following an announcement by the water utility to spend over €40m between Meath’s largest town and that of Duleek almost 20km away.

In a statement, utility bosses said the €41m investment would “safeguard” water supplies for local homeowners and businesses.

It said a new 16km regional trunk water main and pumping station will not only maintain a water supply to Navan if there is any planned or unplanned disruption at Navan’s Liscarton Water Treatment Plant, but it will also “support social and economic growth”.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager William McKnight said he couldn’t overstate the importance of the project for the local community.

“We’re looking forward to beginning construction of this critical project for the people of Navan. When complete, this new infrastructure will ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply, while the increased capacity will support future growth and development of the town which has seen unprecedented growth in recent years.”

Galway firm Coffey Construction Ltd will deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann with a completion date in late 2025.

In order to facilitate the eight figure development, a number of road closures have been announced with Meath County Council sanctioning the closure of the L1610 between Bolies Little and N2 at Balrath from yesterday, (May 1) to August 21.

Local authority chiefs have said work will take place between 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday alongside Local signposted diversions being in place with local and emergency access being maintained at all times.
