National Bike Week 2024 – Wexford to host a series of events to get you back in the saddle

National Bike Week takes place from May 11 to Sunday May 19.

Wexford County Council in association with a whole host of local groups is aiming to get more and more people back in the saddle this Bike Week with a whole host of events across the county from May 11 to 19.

Wexford Bicycle Users Group (WexBUG) will get the ball rolling with a cargo bike demo n Saturday, May 11, hosted by their Chairperson Cormac and committee member Ciarán, both of whom are daily cargo bike users

With the cost of fuel on the rise and concern for the environment, e-bikes and cargo bikes offer a great alternative and many people have swapped out their second car for one of these.

No advance booking is required and the event will take place at Trimmer’s Lane, Selskar, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.

A bike maintenance event will take place at the MUGA at Woodbine Estate, Irishtown, New Ross on the same day at 2 p.m. with numbers limited to 25.

On Sunday, May 13, the Foulksmills Family Fun Cycle will get under way, offering families of all fitness levels a chance to get out on the bike and enjoy some fresh air. The cycle starts at Foulksmills Park at noon and you can book your place via the Wexford County Council website.

On Monday, May 13, a teenage hangout has been organised for Courtown BMX Club, where youngsters will have the opportunity to learn all about the world of BMX. Bikes helmets and snacks will be provided and the event will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. To book a place, email bikebuddiesirl@gmail.com.

Tuesday, May 14th, sees a learn to cycle session for children with additional needs at Enniscorthy Learn to Cycle Park from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., while on Wednesday, May 15, there will be an adapted bike taster session at the South East Greenway in Rosbercon. Running from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, it will offer the opportunity to try out tandems, handcycles and wheelchair platform bikes. To register, email anna.flynn@wexfordcoco.ie

Having been a huge success thus far, there will be a demonstration of Bolt eBikes at Wexford County Council on the Wednesday from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. To book, contact cyclingofficer@wexfordcoco.ie.

That night, there will also be a night ride on the South East Greenway meeting at Rosbercon at 9.30 p.m. This ride is for over 18s only and cyclists must have bike lights, front and rear, and a helmet. You can register at https://bit.ly/3VT3dFb.

Thursday, May 16 will see a learn to cycle event with Balance Buddies at Enniscorthy Learn to Cycle Park from 9.30 a.m. to 2.45 p.m., as well as another bike maintenance demo at Barrow Bikes and Café in Rosbercon at 6 p.m. Booking for the maintenance event can be secured by emailing wexfordbikeweek@lathiel.com.

Also on the Thursday, the pedal pushers active retirement cycling group will host a talk on sports nutrition and eating well to age well. The talk will be at the Brandon House Hotel in New Ross from 2.30 p.m. and places can be booked by emailing cyclingofficer@wexfordcoco.ie.

On Saturday, May 18, Gorey Town Park will host a bike picnic which will include a slow bike race, prizes for best dressed bike, face painting and bike themed prizes. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and promises to be a great family outing.

On the same day, Wexford Wheelers will invite people on a 25k spin from Wexford Quay to Killinick and back, staring at 1.30 p.m. This event is for over 18s and you can book your place by emailing wexfordwheelersscc@gmail.com.

That Sunday, May 19, will see an all day event at Courtown BMX Club where youngsters aged 2 to 14 are invited to come along and give it a try from 11 a.m.

Also that Sunday, WexBUG are inviting people to take part in a biodiversity cycle from Ferrybank to Wexford Wildfowl reserve, hosted by committee member Georgia Gaul.

Here, participants have the unique opportunity to meet either a National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger or a member of the Wexford Naturalist Field Club. The guided tour of the North Slob facility offers expert insights into the diverse and captivating life within this Special Protection Area.

From there Georgina will lead the bike ride back to the Quayfront where participants will be treated to free cake and coffee. To book, contact georginagaul@gmail.com.

On the same day, there will also be a biodiversity bike ride in the north of the county with Natasha Ariff and the Gorey Pedestrian and Cycling Group. It will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will meet at the Heritage Orchard next to Gorey Fire Station. To book a place, visit biobike.eventbrite.com.
