What started off as a regular training exercise for Wexford Civil Defence volunteers ended up in a real-life rescue on Wednesday evening, after a man was rescued from the water near Wexford Bridge.

The group of some six volunteers from Wexford Civil Defence were undertaking their regular boat training in the harbour at around 7 p.m. when they noticed a male enter the water near the bridge.

"We were just doing our normal training with six crew when one of them spotted this man,” Peter O’Connor of Wexford Civil Defence said.

"We just happened to be in the area and it was lucky we spotted him.”

The crew helped the distressed man from the water and brought him to the slipway at the RNLI station. The National Ambulance Service attended the scene and he was taken to hospital for further assessment.

"It was a positive outcome,” Peter said. “This is what the training is for.”
