709 homes were built in Cork City and Cork County in the first quarter of this year a Cork TD has claimed.

Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central Colm Burke said the latest homes completion figures for Cork City Council and Cork County Council show further substantial progress.

The official Central Statistics Office (CSO) for homes completed for the first three months of 2024 reveal 709 new residences for both Cork City Council and Cork County Council.

Deputy Burke said the extension of the development levy waiver and the Uisce Éireann connection rebate scheme have been a big help. “More houses are coming on the market.

Cabinet approval this week to extend the waiver for development levies and the rebate for water connection charges will ensure that this great progress in Cork City Council and Cork County Council continues. There is no question that the Development Levy waiver and Uisce Éireann connection rebate scheme has resulted in a huge increase in the number of homes in Cork,” he said.

Mr Burke who was recently appointed Minister of State at the Department of Health continued: “The popularity of the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant with 4,376 applications approved nationwide shows that these supports are delivering. We expect over 45,000 homes across the country this year. The signs of this accelerated progress to deliver homes is evident here in Cork City Council and Cork County Council. The 709 new homes built in 2024 represent a new start and a bright future for those individuals, couples and families who now live in them.”

“The Help to Buy Scheme has assisted 46,875 individuals and families since its inception in 2017,” said Deputy Burke. “Our party is advocating for this to be extended by another five years to provide stability for future homeowners and builders in Cork City Council and Cork County Council. Behind these figures are the people, individuals, couples and families in Cork who now own their own homes.

“The First Home scheme, initiated in July 2022, is designed to close the gap for qualified buyers in Cork City Council and Cork County Council between the maximum mortgage available to them and the price of a new home,” he added.
