The state of Co Wexford’s roads have attracted a lot of media attention in recent weeks, especially in coverage of council meetings. Various roads and junctions around the county have come in for criticism of late, including the New Line Road from Wexford to Duncannon, which was labelled a ‘death trap’ at a recent meeting of Rosslare Municipal District.

The New Line Road has been dubbed Ireland’s most notorious road in recent years and has been the subject of countless debates in County Hall. It featured in a recent RTÉ Prime Time special on road safety.

Elsewhere in Wexford town, following a horror crash which nearly saw his young family wiped out, Wexford man Jamie Lambert called on Wexford County Council to take action on the notorious junction where it happened.

There have been numerous complaints over the Stravehall junction, which sees Sinnottstown Lane and Whiterock Hill join the Coolballow Road.

However, at the April meeting of Wexford County Council, Borough Engineer Eilís Furlong confirmed that there was “no budget” for works there within the next year.

Meanwhile, at the April meeting of Wexford County Council, director of services Eamonn Hore admitted that the local authority is struggling to improve the quality of roads with current funding levels. “Wexford has some of the poorest roads in the country, and we’ll be making the case that you can’t give the counties with the better roads the same amount of money every year and hope that Wexford will just magically get better,” he said.

Weather has also played its part. Storm Kathleen, which battered our coasts earlier this month, also played havoc with some roads, hampering access to beaches. In the aftermath of Storm Kathleen, Cllr Michael Whelan said: The state of some of the roadways to the beaches isn’t good as it’s pretty much been raining no stop since June.”

All this begs the question…
