Ballsbridge-based John P Byrne and his mother Ciara are directors of Santenay, a holding company for a hotel and property group they inherited from the late John J Byrne. The Kerryman made his money building ballrooms in London and office blocks and apartments in central Dublin and Ballsbridge. He also owned the Brandon Hotel in Kerry.

The firm made a €28.8m profit in 2018, and had properties valued at €281m, with €204.5m of retained profits, and €74m of borrowings. There are two other sons and five daughters in the family. Among the properties are two sites near Parnell Square, as well as offices D’Olier House — used by the Department of Social Welfare — and Parnell House.
