There was a large multi-agency response to a two-vehicle road crash outside Wexford town this (Thursday) afternoon.

Four ambulances, two fire brigades and a number of garda cars rushed to the scene at the junction of Sinnottstown Lane and Coolballow Road just outside Wexford town.

The collision involved a car carrying a young family of two adults and two young children which was travelling from McDonalds back in the direction of the Coolballow Road, while the van, heading towards Murrintown, had two occupants on board.

All were assessed by paramedics at the scene and the road was closed to traffic by Gardaí. While support from the emergency air ambulance was initially called for, this was eventually stood down and all six people were brought to Wexford General Hospital for treatment.

Although some of the injuries sustained are understood to be relatively serious, they were described as “non life-threatening” in the case of all six people.

The road remained closed with diversions in place as garda forensic collision investigators carried out a full examination of the scene.

While refusing to get into the specifics of the incident, Ambulance Officer and Independent councillor Ger Carthy said that urgent action was required at what has become an increasingly busy junction in recent years.

"There’s been multiple collisions at the junction in recent years,” he said. “I know my colleague in the Rosslare Municipal District Lisa McDonald has raised it on a couple of occasions, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

"Wexford County Council needs to seriously look at this junction now. That situation today could easily have turned out very, very differently.”
