Patthana Garden in Kiltegan is all set to open for the season this month and its creator, artist TJ Maher, has just released a new book titled ‘Grounded in the Garden - An artist's guide to creating a beautiful garden in harmony with nature’.

In 1996, TJ and his now husband stumbled upon a property dating from the 1880s in west Wicklow. The garden was somewhat neglected but TJ could feel that there was something special about it. Now, Patthana is considered to be one of the best small secret gardens in the country.

Featuring TJ’s own glorious photographs as well as contributions by Jason Ingram, Clive Nichols, Richard Murphy and Kieran Neary, this deeply personal book explores the practical considerations that come into play when creating a beautiful garden which also respects nature.

Speaking about the book, TJ said: “It is my reflections on nature, and an invitation to celebrate all of its beauty and wonder. It is also my musings on love and how we can find our worth and love for ourselves and each other, through observing the natural world and what it can teach us.

“It also has all my practical advice in chapters such as 'Using colour in the garden', 'How to create and recreate borders', 'Getting the most from your garden' and lots more.”

‘Grounded in the Garden’ is published by Pimpernel Press and is now available in all good bookstores, online, and at Patthana Garden.

The garden will open every Friday and Sunday from the beginning of April to the end of September, from midday to 5pm. Teas and home baked cakes will be served on vintage China each open day. The season beings on the first Friday in April with a tulip extravaganza.
