The first time I interviewed Imogen Cotter, we had to stop halfway through. We were chatting over coffee at Dublin Airport before she headed off to Spain for training and when we got to discussing her horrific crash near Girona in early 2022, her whole body started shaking and she began to sob.

Cotter announced her retirement from cycling just last week, after a two-year battle with the mental and physical scars sustained in that crash.
