Students, families and school faculty from Scoil Chonglais in Baltinglass enjoyed an adventurous day out when they raised more than €2,500 for their school on a sponsored walk to the top of Lugnaquilla.

The damp and cold day saw over 50 brave hikers, joined by a team of marshals, climb Leinster's highest peak as the art of a series of fundraisers undertaken by the west Wicklow secondary school.

Led by school caretaker and hiking enthusiast Andy Owens, who guided the intrepid group across the breath-taking terrain, while over 50 started the walk, the distance and elements proved too difficult for some (but most did make it to the top), with the persistent rain turning to hail on the last push to the top.

Hailing the event as an overwhelming success, Scoil Chonglais PRO Wilma Murphy thanked organisers, Andy, the hiking party and all those who sponsored the walk for helping raise much-needed funds for equipment and school activities.

“The hike couldn’t have gone any better and raised vital funds to provide the resources students and teachers need,” Wilma said.

“It was organised by Paul Rooney and Alison Cullen, who are owed a big thanks, along with our caretaker Andy Owens, who has a special interest in hill walking and offered to showcase his skills and act as the guide on the day.

“Everyone enjoyed the day and was glad to get back to their warm dry clothes, with over €2500 raised for the school.

“All of the students would have got sponsorship cards and filled them in, and anyone that wanted to go – parents, students, teachers, the wider community – came along on the hike.

“At the moment, we are doing a lot of fundraising in the school and trying to come up with different ways of doing it.

“The walk was a really great idea, and we hope to have many more interesting fundraisers in the near future.”
